How to Read a Candy Label in 30 Seconds
Ingredient lists are ordered by weight. Whatever sits in the first slot is most of what you're eating. If that first word is a syrup, you're eating syrup with flavoring on top.
Second, count the line items. A short list is not automatically healthier, but it is always more honest — there's nowhere for filler to hide.
Third, scan for color codes. Numbers after a color name mean a synthetic dye. Real fruit and vegetable candy doesn't need them to look good.
Our label reads: sweet potato, cane sugar, water, spice. It takes about four seconds to read, which is the point.
